Some drought relief seen from rains on U.S. Plains

Reuters: Crop-friendly rainfall and snow were moving across drought-stricken areas of the U.S. Plains hard red winter wheat region at mid-week, providing much-needed relief ahead of the growing season for the 2013 crop, an agricultural meteorologist said on Wednesday.
"Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado now have the chance for two shower events over the next two weeks that would offer some improvement in topsoil moisture," said Commodity Weather Group (CWG) meteorologist Joel Widenor.

Reuters: Crop-friendly snowfall and some showers were moving across the U.S. Southwest Plains on Tuesday which will help but not eliminate the harmful impact on wheat production from the worst drought in over 50 years, an agricultural meteorologist said.
"It's beginning to snow in the Southwest Plains this morning and that will continue through the day leaving 2.00 to 6.00 inches there," said Don Keeney, meteorologist for MDA EarthSat Weather.

Reuters: Dry weather continues to plague the drought-stricken U.S. Plains and western Midwest with only light showers and snowfall expected this week, an agricultural meteorologist said on Monday.

Reuters: Light snow expected next week in crop growing areas of the United States will provide only minor relief from the worst drought in more than 50 years, an agricultural meteorologist said on Friday.

Reuters: Dry weather persists in the Plains and western Midwest leading to concern about the fate of the 2013 U.S. hard red winter wheat crop and seedings of the corn and soybean crops, an agricultural meteorologist said on Tuesday.

Reuters: Dry weather should continue through at least the end of January in the drought-stricken U.S. Plains and a blast of Arctic cold air in the Midwest early next week poses a threat to unprotected livestock and possibly some wheat, an agricultural meteorologist said on Friday.

Reuters: The worst drought in the United States in over a half century slashed crop output, snarled river transportation and is now drawing down water in the U.S. Great Lakes, particularly Lake Michigan.
