Reuters: A weather system packing high winds and snow moved through the U.S. High Plains on Wednesday, bringing with it tornadoes and warnings of whiteouts and dangerous road conditions.
The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings for eastern Colorado, northwestern Kansas and southwestern Nebraska ahead of the system, which it expected to bring gusts of 55 miles per hour (88 km per hour) and dump at least 5 inches (8 cm) of snow in some areas.

Reuters: Firefighters have contained the so-called Hidden Pines wildfire inside a well-defined footprint after it burned on 4,582 acres and forced the evacuation of more than 400 homes, local officials in Bastrop County said during a news conference on Saturday.
"We have been playing defense on this fire for the last four days and today we are in containment mode, which means that we are not going to let that fire score anything else," Bastrop County Judge Paul Pape during a news conference.

Wisconsin lawmakers approve bill clearing way for iron ore mine

Reuters: Wisconsin's Republican-controlled state Assembly on Thursday approved a bill that would clear the way for a possible $1.5 billion iron ore mine in the far northwest corner of the state by streamlining environmental regulations.
Representatives voted 58-39 along party lines to approve the bill that would set a 420-day limit for the state Department of Natural Resources to approve or deny a permit for iron ore mining.
