Supreme Court halts TMT construction

KITV: It was supposed to be Round 4 in the battle over Mauna Kea – another potential clash between the TMT and those who oppose it. The previous three showdowns went in favor of those who call themselves the “Protectors of Mauna Kea.” But this time, not even a minute of protesting had to happen before TMT’s opportunity came to a halt. On Tuesday, those who oppose the TMT were getting ready to yet again stand as one in its way. But in a late turn of events, a Supreme Court ruling said TMT must temporarily...

KITV: Seven people were arrested for camping during restricted hours from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. and six were given citations for prohibited activity. Demonstrators with Aloha Aina say they were caught off guard. "They didn't inform us why they are arresting. That's why they were here. They just kind of got ready for action started grabbing people and said you're going to get arrested. If you want to get arrested or do you want to get a citation?" said Lakea Trask. The state says that was not the case....

Ige not considering National Guard to settle Mauna Kea dispute

KITV: The governor’s comments come after a dozen protesters were arrested on the mountain last Wednesday for refusing to move out of the way of construction crews trying to reach the site of what could become the world’s largest land-based observatory. Ige said he wants to enforce existing state law that prevents overnight camping at Mauna Kea and the blocking of the summit road, but did not provide a timeline. "We are being smart about what that means and trying to be comprehensive in what changes...

UH: Mauna Kea summit road to remain closed

KITV: The Mauna Kea summit road, beginning at the Halepohaku mid-level facilities, will remain closed to all but authorized personnel until further notice, according to the University of Hawai'i. The UH Office of Mauna Kea Management is currently assessing damage to the road and stability of the slopes for potential rockfalls. UH exercised its authority under the Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan to close the road last week due to hazardous conditions. They included the presence of boulders...

Rocks removed from Mauna Kea Access Road

KITV: Gov. David Ige said the boulders and rock structures that were found on the gravel road leading to the summit of Mauna Kea have been removed on Thursday. The University of Hawaii says there were four completed rock walls as of 7 a.m. Thursday. They were removed by around noon. All that is left are two newly-constructed ahu on Mauna Kea Access Road. The road has been temporarily closed until further notice. The Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan authorizes the University of Hawai'i to close...

Constitutional issues arise atop Mauna Kea

KITV: The issue of whether the Thirty Meter Telescope should be built atop Mauna Kea took a backseat for several hours Thursday morning as some protestors and certain members of the media were allowed to bypass a roadblock. The issue arose when a ranger working for the University of Hawaii allowed a select group of people past the barricade to remove large rocks that had been placed on the summit road by TMT protestors the day before. Although at least one reporter was allowed in with the group, KITV4’s...

UH apologizes for delayed media access to Mauna Kea

KITV: What happened on the mountain top Thursday took some state officials by surprise, but according to the state's top lawyer, the decision about access sits squarely at the University of Hawaii. "The University of Hawaii has had the authority under the Mauna Kea management plan to temporarily close the road leading up to mountain for hazardous conditions or safety concerns," said Douglas Chin. Managing Mauna Kea is a sensitive issue for UH. Protestors point to that as impetus for the blockade. But...

TMT crews fail reach Mauna Kea summit

KITV: On Wednesday, hundreds of protesters forced construction crews for the Thirty Meter Telescope to come to a halt, but it didn’t come without sacrifice. In total, 12 people were arrested for obstructing the passage, but after a six-hour attempt to make it to the top of the summit, TMT crews only reached about a mile and a half up from hale pohaku before turning back. It’s been a long haul for those for and against building what would be one of the world's largest telescopes on land held sacred...

11 arrested as TMT crews fail get to Mauna Kea summit

KITV: Construction crews for the Thirty Meter Telescope advanced roughly 300 yards up Mauna Kea before they were met by protesters Wednesday morning. The TMT crews were crossing onto a portion of the road managed by the state. That's where Department of Land and Natural Resources officers were waiting to take over the escort. There were hundreds more protesters lining the mountain in front of them and multiple people were arrested. In total, 11 people were arrested, according to West Hawaii Today....
