United Kingdom: Flood warnings in place after weekend of rain and snow

Guardian: Large parts of England and Wales are on flood alert after heavy rain – plus snow and hail – swept across the UK over the weekend.
On Monday morning 16 flood warnings – meaning flooding is expected and immediate action needed – were in place: six in the south-west of England, five in the Anglian region and three in the Midlands.
In addition, the Environment Agency published more than 70 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, almost half of them in the south-east of England.

Guardian: Wales should make sure it receives proper payment for any water exported to ease drought-hit areas of England, Welsh politicians and economists have said.
Elfyn Llwyd, the leader of Plaid Cymru at Westminster, led calls for a "mature debate" on ensuring Wales is properly paid for one of its richest natural resources.
He said he did not object to water being moved from Wales to England. "I see no reason why that should not happen as we are rich in that resource in Wales."

Confusing year of weather for Britain’s wildlife

Guardian: It was an odd sort of year for weather: effectively two springs and not an awful lot of summer. But it proved an interesting one for Britain's flora and fauna.
The National Trust, which produces an annual end-of-year report on how the British weather has affected its creatures and plants, recorded a boom year for creatures ranging from the grey seal to the large blue butterfly.
