BP sets up ‘snitch line’ for fraudulent Deepwater Horizon damages claims

Guardian: BP has set up a "snitch line" to reward people who inform the oil giant about fraudulent claims related to 2010's massive Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The hotline promises that "tips that lead directly to an indictment, a recovery of money paid, or the denial of a claim because of fraud or corruption may entitle the reporter to a reward".
The move comes after BP appealed to a New Orleans court to reassess the terms of its compensation deal with local businesses, claiming it is being forced...

Guardian: Dolphin calving season has just begun in the Gulf of Mexico and marine biologists are reporting an alarming trend. Between 2000 and 2009, an average of 25 to 30 dolphins were found dead on the beaches of the Gulf each year. This year, 13 dead dolphins were found between 13 January and 14 February alone; 11 were aborted or newborns. Biologists have been following this trend for three years, since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster claimed 11 lives and triggered the worst oil spill in US history....
Amazon pollution victims to ask judge to award $8bn Chevron money

Guardian: Victims of what they say is one the world's worst environmental disasters will on Friday ask a New York court to free up billions of dollars in compensation awarded to them in a record ruling earlier this year – and oust the judge who blocked their claim.
The $8bn fine was imposed by an Ecuadorian court in February on oil giant Chevron, on behalf of 30,000 residents of the Amazon basin whose health and environment were allegedly damaged by chemical-laden waste water dumped by Texaco's operations...
Hurricane Irene leaves US trail of destruction 1,100 miles long

Guardian: As the remnants of hurricane Irene began to dissipate over Canada, the death toll from the storm continued to rise and widespread flooding affected states across the US north-east.
The huge, slow-moving storm travelled along 1,100 miles of US coastline leaving a trail of destruction reaching far inland. At least 28 deaths have so far been attributed to Irene with about 3 million people left without power along its path.
People have struggled to get back to work as officials tried to remove...
