Seven more Alberta counties consider declaring states agricultural disaster

Edmonton Journal: Seven more Alberta counties are considering declaring states of agricultural disaster as persistent dry weather threatens the livelihoods of farmers across the province. Leduc, Athabasca, Northern Lights, Northern Sunrise, Barrhead, Westlock and Thorhild counties all have votes planned in the next few weeks on weather to make that step. Tuesday, Parkland County west of Edmonton and McKenzie County in northern Alberta announced they had declared a disaster. A declaration of a state of...

Canada leads world in forest decline, report says

Edmonton Journal: The world’s virgin forests are being lost at an increasing rate and the largest portion of the degradation is in Canada, according to a new report. No longer is Brazil the main villain in the struggle to stop forest destruction. “Canada is the number one in the world for the total area of the loss of intact forest landscapes since 2000,” Peter Lee, of Forest Watch Canada, said in an interview. He said the main drivers are fires, logging and energy and industrial development. “There is...

Canadian board requires funds pipeline abandonment

Edmonton Journal: Pipeline companies under federal jurisdiction such as Enbridge and Kinder Morgan, which have plans for major oil projects to the west coast of B.C., must create funds to pay for abandoning pipelines by the start of next year. The National Energy board announced that starting Jan. 1, 2015 pipeline companies must create a mechanism to start setting aside money to pay for abandoning pipelines, through measures such as a trust or a letter of credit from a major bank or a surety bond. While pipelines...

Canada: Nothern Gateway Pipeline Not Popular Among B.C. Coastal Businesses

Edmonton Journal: As far as business groups go, the Tofino-Long Beach Chamber of Commerce isn’t the biggest or most powerful organization in British Columbia, but its members are still taking a very vocal and public stand against the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline. Their motive is simple: past experience. In late December 1988, fuel from an 850,000 litre spill in Grays Harbour, Wash., made its way north to the west coast of Vancouver Island, fouling local beaches, killing thousands of seabirds and closing commercial...

Study Finds High Levels of Carcinogens Downwind of Petrochemical Plants in Edmonton

Edmonton Journal: A newly published study says air downwind from a cluster of petrochemical plants northeast of Edmonton contains pollutants at levels equal to some of the world's largest cities. Other pollutants, including some known to cause cancer, also measured well above normal. And cancer rates linked to those chemicals were found to be higher in communities closest to the so-called Industrial Heartland. Although scientists don't definitively link the two, one of the report's co-authors said the findings...

Canada: Shine light on money for oilsands debate

Edmonton Journal: The oilsands are Alberta's advantage, and while no further proof is needed, it's right there in a provincial budget that predicts unrivalled revenue and royalties for the industry and the province respectively. And it's in the national census that proves Canadians from other provinces are flocking to Alberta, no doubt for the promise of jobs and prosperity. It's there in a report from TD Economics that projects a country-leading 2.5-per-cent increase in Alberta's GDP from 2016 to 2021. It's there...

Nuclear power evokes nightmares, but coal poses greater risks to your health

Edmonton Journal: History suggests nuclear power rarely kills and causes little illness. That's also what engineers have concluded when they model scenarios for potential accidents at nuclear facilities such as this one, the San Onofre power plant in California. Radioactive water is leaking into the sea, there's a little plutonium in the soil, and traces of nuclear fallout have been detected in places as far apart as Kuwait and Maryland. In a few parts of Japan, you're also not supposed to eat the broccoli or the...
