Startling Footage Calif Reservoirs Shows Devastating Impact Epic Drought
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on August 1st, 2015
EcoWatch: If you`re wondering how much damage four years of an epic drought can wreck, look no further than the condition of California`s depleted reservoirs. In new footage of the Folsom, Oroville and Shasta reservoirs--captured by the California Department of Water Resources (CA-DWR) on July 20--it`s genuinely startling to see how little water remains. The CA-DWR wrote on Facebook that Folsom Lake measured at 34 percent of capacity, Lake Oroville at 35 percent and Lake Shasta at 45 percent. Jay Famiglietti,...
Toxic Floods From Coal Mines and Power Plants Hit Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay World Heritage Site
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on August 1st, 2015
EcoWatch: Ongoing downpours in northeastern Vietnam have resulted in toxic spills and flooding from multiple coal mine and power plant sites in the province surrounding the Ha Long Bay World Heritage Site.
“The likelihood of both immediate and ongoing health and environmental hazards for locals and the rare environment are clearly increasing by the hour and the scale of this event cannot be understated,” said Donna Lisenby, Clean and Safe Energy campaign manager for Waterkeeper Alliance.

Halfway to Hell: Global Temperatures Hit Critical Point, Warn Scientists
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on July 31st, 2015
EcoWatch: As 2015 shapes up to be the hottest year on record, scientists warn the world could be halfway towards surpassing countries’ self-set red line of 2C temperature rise.
New research commissioned by the New Scientist shows that four out of the five major surface temperature records are set to pass the 1C point this year, measured from the 1850-1899 average.
At 1C climate change is already affecting the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations as warming brings escalating sea level rise...
Harmful Algal Blooms Predicted for Lake Erie, Says NOAA
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on July 22nd, 2015
EcoWatch: Summer is here and that means it’s toxic algae season for Lake Erie. Harmful algal blooms have been making the lake green around the gills for the past several years. Last August, the cyanobacteria even contaminated Toledo’s drinking water, leaving more than 400,000 people high and dry for two days. Scientists from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say this summer will be another doozy. The agency’s seasonal forecast predicts that 2015 could be the second-worst year on record after...
Plankton Eating Plastic Caught on Camera for First Time Ever
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on July 9th, 2015
EcoWatch: We know that plastic waste leaves a devastating trail, and now for the first time, we can actually witness it impacting the oceans` tiniest creatures. Zooplankton, the foundation of the marine food system, have been caught eating plastic in a new video from Five Films (via New Scientist).
The footage, captured under a microscope at the UK-based Plymouth Marine Laboratory, shows copepods consuming--and accumulating--fluorescent polystyrene beads measuring 7 to 30 micrometers in diameter.
"We...
5 Extreme Weather Events Impacting the Planet
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on July 9th, 2015
EcoWatch: Deniers will keep on denying apparently, but the signs of climate change are everywhere. As the planet has warmed up, severe weather events are happening in every corner of the globe, alerting us to the need for strong, immediate action.
1. Many parts of the world are suffering from extended heat waves. We`ve heard a lot about the heat waves blanketing India and Pakistan, which have claimed a high body count. Thousands of people in the region have died as a result. The situation has been exacerbated...
Internal Documents Expose Fossil Fuel Industry’s Decades of Deception on Climate Change
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on July 9th, 2015
EcoWatch: Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse created a stir recently when he speculated that fossil fuel companies may be violating federal racketeering law by colluding to defraud the public about the threat posed by carbon pollution. Whitehouse likened their actions to those of the tobacco companies that conspired to manufacture doubt about the link between smoking and disease when they were all too aware of it. In 2006, a federal district court ruled that the tobacco industry’s deceptive campaign to...
Water Use Fracking Has Skyrocketed, Stressing Drought-Ridden States
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on July 1st, 2015
EcoWatch: Fracking operations in the U.S. have gotten thirstier in the last 15 years, consuming more than 28 times the water they did a mere 15 years ago.
A new study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in partnership with the American Geophysical Union, shows that not only has the number of such operations grown as fracking has expanded its reach and improved technology has allowed drilling in harder to reach locations, but individual wells are consuming more water as well. The median amount of water...
Scientists Baffled Over Unprecedented Warming Ocean Off Atlantic and Pacific Coasts
Posted by EcoWatch: None Given on June 28th, 2015
EcoWatch: Oceanographers are puzzled by an accelerated burst of warming sea that threatens the fisheries of the American Atlantic coast. Meanwhile, off the U.S. West coast, scientists report that they have been baffled by a mysterious “blob” of water up to 4°C warmer than the surrounding Pacific, linked to weird weather across the entire country. Jacob Forsyth and research colleagues from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts report in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans...
