Fracking Opponents Try Again for Ban on Michigan Ballot

Detroit News: The wheels begin to turn in earnest next week on efforts to bring a ban on hydraulic fracturing before Michigan voters in 2016.
When Michigan's Board of State Canvassers meets Tuesday, the four-member panel will review forms for the collection of signatures to initiate legislation. It's a paperwork formality necessary before supporters of a ban on the controversial natural gas extraction process can begin approaching state residents.

Low lake levels have Michigan harbors scrambling to keep waterways navigable

Detroit News: So much of Pentwater's well-being hinges on the channel -- the 2,500-foot-long entryway from Lake Michigan to the harbor.
The channel brings in boats. The boats bring in visitors. The visitors bring in money. And the money sustains the village's shops, restaurants and vacation rental business. The channel is the main factor in the annual boom that sees the local population grow from its normal 600 to 700 to roughly 5,000 in the summer.

Lakes Michigan, Huron sink to lowest level ever

Detroit News: In the nearly 100 years researchers have catalogued the rise and fall of the Great Lakes, Michigan and Huron have never seen a month like January.
The two-lake system recorded its lowest-ever level for a month, a mean of 576.02 feet above sea level. It's a number that dips below the all-time low for January — 576.12 feet — as well as the all-time low for any month, 576.05 feet in March 1964.
For those who live along or play in the waters of the Great Lakes, the news is disturbing but unsurprising....
Al Gore ties climate crisis to Great Lakes

Detroit News: It's been more than five years since Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," put global warming at the forefront of the national debate.
And the former vice president's passion for the subject appears intact.
Gore arrived on the Wayne State University campus Thursday afternoon and delivered a rousing address tying the fight to combat climate change to other environmental issues -- particularly, efforts to help the Great Lakes region rebound from decades of industrial pollution.
