Baltimore Sun: As if the failings of a do-nothing Congress and the continued strife in the Middle East weren't depressing enough, it's been a rough week for those gauging the impact of climate change on Maryland, too. First comes a report that forecasts a big chunk of the state will be underwater by 2100, and then researchers revealed that those rising waters are getting a whole lot warmer a whole lot faster than expected. Baltimore Sun: It's Memorial Day, and the forecast is for renewed mocking and derision regarding man-made climate change from the know-nothing, science-averse wing of the Republican Party. President Barack Obama's warning - issued during his commencement address at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy graduation ceremonies Wednesday - that climate change represents a national security threat seems certain to provoke that kind of stormy reaction.

Baltimore Sun: If Americans needed a reminder of the serious environmental risks posed by the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, they got it last week with the oil spill in Mayflower, a suburb of Little Rock, Arkansas. More than 12,000 barrels of crude spilled into the town like a black river, coating lawns and forcing evacuations.
It's still not certain what caused a leak from the ExxonMobil pipeline that carries Canadian crude oil from Illinois to the Texas Gulf Coast. But what is clear is that such pipeline spills...
