Associated Press: A man arrested while blocking telescope construction crews on a Hawaii mountain was acquitted Friday after a trial that was conducted in Hawaiian.
Kahookahi Kanuha was among dozens of protesters arrested during attempts to resume construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea. One of the reasons protesters oppose the $1.4 billion project is that many Native Hawaiians consider the mountain sacred.
Kanuha's case had been postponed because he insisted on defending himself in the language...

Associated Press: The Hawaii Supreme Court on Tuesday temporarily suspended a permit that allows a giant telescope to be built on a mountain many Native Hawaiians consider sacred. The court granted telescope opponents' request for an emergency stay of the effectiveness of the permit until Dec. 2, or until another court order. The ruling was issued as protesters were gathering on Mauna Kea in anticipation of blocking telescope work from resuming. Work has been stalled since April amid protests. "Mahalo ke akua,"...

Associated Press: Many of the protesters opposed to plans for a giant telescope atop Mauna Kea came down from the mountain for a large gathering Wednesday around the King Kamehameha statue in Honolulu. As protesters who have been camping on the Big Island mountain traveled to Oahu, three or so remained behind in case workers attempt to resume construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope, said Kahookahi Kanuha, one of the leaders against the $1.4 billion project. Kanuha led a news conference Wednesday at the base of...

Associated Press: Hundreds of protesters on a Hawaii mountain road erupted in cheers Wednesday after construction crews turned around and retreated from the site for what would be one of the world's largest telescopes.
The billion-dollar project has drawn intense opposition from Native Hawaiians who say the 18-story observatory on the Big Island's Mauna Kea would desecrate land they consider sacred.
Work on the Thirty Meter Telescope has been stalled for months after a large group blocked access to the mountaintop...

Giant telescope construction set to resume on Hawaii mountain, but battle continues

Associated Press: A battle is poised to unfold on a Hawaii mountain where one of the world's largest telescopes is set to be built.
As work resumes Wednesday on the Thirty Meter Telescope atop the Big Island's Mauna Kea, protesters will try to peacefully stop the construction because they say it tramples on land that is sacred to Native Hawaiians.
"We're bracing ourselves mentally, spiritually for the battle ahead," said Kahookahi Kanuha, one of the protesters camped out near the visitor centre at a 9,200-foot...

Associated Press: The University of Hawaii announced a plan Monday that will lead to the removal of several large telescopes on Mauna Kea.
School officials will meet with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources this week to discuss the decommissioning process.
The plan comes nearly a week after Gov. David Ige said school officials need to do a better job caring for the mountain and asked that they carry out 10 actions.
The discussions were sparked by protests against the proposed Thirty Meter Telescope....
David Ige, Hawaii governor: Telescope can continue, changes needed
Posted by Associated Press: Jennifer Sinco Kelleher on May 27th, 2015
Associated Press: A project to build a giant telescope near the summit of Mauna Kea has the right to move forward, but Hawaii has failed the mountain in many ways, Gov. David Ige said Tuesday. Amid protests and arrests of opponents blocking construction workers from accessing the site, construction has been halted since last month on the $1.4 billion Thirty Meter Telescope. Ige said it’s up to the nonprofit telescope company to determine when construction will resume. “And we will support and enforce their right...
