United States: EPA finishing up Pavillion-area monitoring wells

Associated Press: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has almost finished drilling two monitoring wells to test for pollution in a central Wyoming community where residents suspect chemicals related to gas drilling have contaminated their well water. Meanwhile, the EPA has pushed back a meeting with residents of the Pavillion area. Originally planned for July, the public meeting now will be held in August. Forest loss in India likely worse than conventionally believed

Mongabay: Researchers have questioned 2009 findings by the Forest Survey of India (FSI) that found that India's forests were, unlike many tropical Asian nations', on the rebound. According to the FSI, Indian forests had grown by almost five percent from the 1990s. Yet, were these finding too good to be true? According to Jean-Philippe Puyravaud and Priya Davidar of Pondicherry University, and William Laurance from James Cook University, the findings were very likely too ...

Gulf Oil Cleanup Crews Trample Nesting Birds

National Geographic: Standing on a white-sand beach at Florida's Gulf Islands National Seashore Thursday, blotchy stains from the Gulf oil spill could be seen creeping past the red-lettered "keep out" signs meant to protect nesting shorebirds. And, according to conservationists, some oil-cleanup crews are having trouble heeding the warnings, too. "This pipeline is a multibillion-dollar investment to expand our reliance on the dirtiest source of transportation ...

Let's just say it's a fair amount. But not this year. The BP oil spill has seen to that, as the usual stream of tourists has become a trickle. Likewise for Mr. Smith's hours on the job and tips from customers. BP has promised to make "whole" those whose livelihoods are curtailed because of the gargantuan ...

Oil comes ashore in Texas as BP dismisses money fears

Agence France-Presse: Clean-up efforts in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill extended to Texas and Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, as BP dismissed reports of deeper financial woes. Officials said crews collected tar balls and waste from Lake Pontchartrain, the vast estuary near New Orleans, as rough weather continued to hamper the containment and skimming effort near the spill site in the Gulf. US Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said the huge spill was now threatening all the states along the Gulf coast ...
