U.S. lawmakers backing Keystone pipeline mull next steps
Posted by Reuters: Patrick Rucker on February 4th, 2014
Reuters: A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers voiced support on Tuesday for the Keystone XL crude oil pipeline, and did not rule out using legislation to force the White House to approve the Canada-to-Texas project.
Several U.S. senators and representatives encouraged President Barack Obama to bless TransCanada Corp's plan to build a line that would carry up to 830,000 barrels per day of oil sands crude from Western Canada and light, sweet crude from North Dakota to oil refiners in the Gulf of Mexico....
Canada sees path for Keystone but won’t talk details

Reuters: Canada will do more in the global fight against climate change as the nation develops its vast oil sands resources and tries to win backing for the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, the country's energy minister said on Monday.
The proposed pipeline that would link oil sands fields in western Canada to Gulf Coast refiners should come in tandem with plans to curtail carbon dioxide pollution, said Canada's energy minister Joe Oliver after a meeting with U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz .

Oil-by-train may not be substitute for Keystone pipeline
Posted by Reuters: Patrick Rucker on April 18th, 2013
Reuters: The prospects for bringing large amounts of Canadian heavy crude oil into the United States by train is a contentious issue as the U.S. government weighs whether to allow the controversial Keystone XL pipeline to go ahead.
An assumption that oil would move by rail without Keystone was a key part of a U.S. State Department report in March that found development of Canada's oil sands region will proceed at roughly the same rate, with or without the pipeline.
That finding undercut warnings from...
Montana governor: Oil and gas boom could fund clean energy
Posted by Reuters: Patrick Rucker on December 14th, 2012
Reuters: Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, who been an advocate of the recent oil and gas boom that could upend U.S. energy policy, says he will keep spreading his message when he leaves office.
Schweitzer, whose tenure as governor will end next month due to state term limits, said the wave of drilling across his state could be a model of how to eliminate the nation's dependence on foreign fuel - if lawmakers would just get out of the way.
"Those SOBs out there," he said. "They got $60 mouths and $2...
Asia coal export boom brings no bonus for US taxpayers
Posted by Reuters: Patrick Rucker on December 4th, 2012
Reuters: U.S. miners who are booking big profits on coal sales to Asia are enjoying an accounting windfall to boot.
By valuing coal at low domestic prices rather than the much higher price fetched overseas, coal producers can dodge the larger royalty payout when mining federal land.
The practice stands to pad the bottom line for the mining sector if Asian exports surge in coming years as the industry hopes, a Reuters investigation has found.

Georgia latest state seeking to end U.S. ethanol rule
Posted by Reuters: Patrick Rucker on August 21st, 2012
Reuters: Georgia, the center of U.S. poultry production, is adding its voice to a string of states asking Washington to help ease pressure on corn prices by suspending rules that send a large share of the crop to produce ethanol.
Ethanol fuel made from corn is blended with gasoline under a federal program meant to encourage domestic energy sources, but the rules can be waived under a formal appeal from a state.
Livestock farmers complain that demand for ethanol wrongly diverts a large share of the feed...
