Abnormal heavy rainfall can recur frequently, says climatologist

Rakyat Post: The disastrous floods which hit some states last year are expected to recur more frequently and with greater intensity as a result of global warming and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) phenomenon, says climatologist and oceanographer Professor Dr Fredolin T. Tangang. He said climate change due to global warming was causing a worsening of the phenomenon. The media had previously reported that the MJO phenomenon was a factor causing heavy rains in Malaysia. MJO is an element in the tropical...

State looks at health impact of climate change

Star Tribune: Minnesotans will suffer from more asthma, respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease and such bug-borne diseases as West Nile virus and Lyme disease as climate change takes hold across the Upper Midwest, according to a new report from the Minnesota Health Department. It’s the latest in a series of “vulnerability assessments” that Gov. Mark Dayton ordered from his Cabinet to prepare Minnesota for the inevitable. The 98-page Minnesota Climate and Health Profile Report says that health risks are...

Climate Change Puts Alaska’s Dog Sled Races On Thin Ice

National Public Radio: For more than 30 years, the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest International Sled Dog race, which begins Saturday, has followed the Yukon River between Whitehorse, Canada, and Fairbanks, Alaska. A little open water along the Yukon Quest trail is nothing new, but in recent years, long unfrozen stretches of the Yukon River have shaken even the toughest mushers. Last year, musher Hank DeBruin of Ontario had stopped along the Yukon River to rest his dog team in the middle of the night, when the ice started...

257,000 people could die from China’s toxic air over the next decade

Grist: If nothing is done to slash the levels of toxic smog in China’s air, some 257,000 Chinese people could die over the next decade from pollution-related diseases, according to a new study released this week by Peking University and Greenpeace. That really is a lot of people; it’s roughly equal to the population of Orlando, Fla., or Buffalo, N.Y. The researchers analyzed the 2013 levels of what’s known as PM2.5 pollutants - tiny airborne particles billowing from China’s coal production and industry....
