Huge California mudslide may have been triggered by drought

Reuters: California's three-year drought might have triggered Mount Shasta's worst mudslide in two decades which damaged hiking trails and forced two roads to close over the weekend, a national park spokeswoman said on Monday. Mud and debris began flowing down Mud Creek Canyon on the southeast side of Mt. Shasta, a 14,000-foot volcano about 50 miles south of the Oregon border, on Saturday afternoon and continued through the night, Shasta-Trinity National Park spokeswoman Andrea Capps said. "The woman...

Global Warming Goal of 2 Degrees Dwindling

Nature World: As our climate continues to change and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions keep climbing, scientists and world leaders alike fear that the chances of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius is dwindling fast. Now, climate officials have announced that it's highly unlikely we'll meet that goal due to the concentration of greenhouse gases. In an effort to track carbon emissions, the Global Carbon Project (GCP) published three peer-reviewed articles identifying the challenges for society to keep...

Six ways climate change is making us sick

Time: Just a day after the People`s Climate March, one of the largest international environmental marches, a new analysis of 56 studies on climate change-related health problems shows that increasingly, global temperatures and severe weather events will continue to have a major impact on global health. In the U.S. alone, several cities are expected to experience many more frequent hot days by the year 2050, and New York City and Milwaukee for example, may have three times their current average of hot...

Climate change is happening despite two decades of UN climate talks

IBT: World leaders have been trying to forge a global treaty on climate change for more than two decades. But persuading countries to abandon profitable fossil fuels -- and instead spend trillions of dollars on new technology and environmental protections -- has proved nearly impossible. The Kyoto Protocol, negotiated in 1997, expired two years ago with little discernable impact on greenhouse gas emissions. (The United States signed, but never ratified, the agreement.) Attempts to work out a successor...

Fracking’s environmental impacts scrutinized

ScienceDaily: Geenhouse gas emissions from the production and use of shale gas would be comparable to conventional natural gas, but the controversial energy source actually faired better than renewables on some environmental impacts, according to new research. The UK holds enough shale gas to supply its entire gas demand for 470 years, promising to solve the country's energy crisis and end its reliance on fossil-fuel imports from unstable markets. But for many, including climate scientists and environmental groups,...

Calif wildfire destroys houses thousands more threatened

Reuters: A wildfire sweeping through parts of California's Sierra Nevada mountains has destroyed 10 houses and 22 outbuildings and is threatening thousands of other structures, fire officials said on Sunday. So far no residents have been hurt, said fire service spokesman Tom Piranio, but 2,800 people had been evacuated. Firefighters had only recently able to enter burned areas to report on the damage, he added. Rain and lower temperatures have helped firefighters make some progress against the blaze...

Climate protesters risk arrest during Wall Street sit-in

Reuters: Hundreds of protesters plan to risk arrest on Monday during an unsanctioned blockade in New York City's financial district to call attention to what organizers say is Wall Street's contribution to climate change. The Flood Wall Street demonstration comes on the heels of Sunday's international day of action that brought some 310,000 people to the streets of New York City in the largest single protest ever held on over climate change. There were no arrests or incidents in Sunday's massive march,...

Rockefellers, Heirs to an Oil Fortune, Will Divest Charity From Fossil Fuels

New York Times: John D. Rockefeller built a vast fortune on oil. Now his heirs are abandoning fossil fuels. The family whose legendary wealth flowed from Standard Oil is planning to announce on Monday that its $860 million philanthropic organization, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, is joining the divestment movement that began a couple years ago on college campuses. The announcement, timed to precede Tuesday’s opening of the United Nations climate change summit meeting in New York City, is part of a broader and...

Greens: Climate march shatters record

Politico: Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon joined a larger-than-expected throng of activists, scientists, students and elected officials who took to New York City's streets Sunday for a massive march meant to sound the alarm about climate change. Organizers initially estimated that the march had drawn 310,000 people, then raised that estimate to nearly 400,000 -- far exceeding their projections of 100,000 attendees and making the procession through midtown Manhattan by far...
